Resumo

Introduction: In 1997 the Food and Drug Administration of USA accepted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) as a therapy in refractory epilepsy to conventional treatment. Aim: Describe effectiveness and security of VNS treatment for refractory epilepsy patients. Method: Bibliographic review of articles published in the Springer and Science Direct databases between the years 2007-2017. The search was conducted between May 9 - July 6, 2017, using descriptors in combination with Boolean operators (OR-AND) and, inclusion-exclusion criteria. Results: Of the sixteen articles that constitute the review, twelve of them use some type of questionnaire to evaluate the quality of life of the patients demonstrating a generalized improvement. Likewise, a decrease in seizure frequency of more than 50% is described, however, as regards the total cessation of seizures, 14% is reached in the best of cases. The adverse effects described are categorized as tolerable and reversible. Conclusion: The reviewed studies show that VNS can be an effective alternative in the treatment of refractory epilepsy.
