Abstract

Objectives: To assess changes in the Dyspepsia-Related Health Scale (DRHS) and in algometric assessment of T4-T5-T6 spinous processes after a weekly manipulative treatment for 4 weeks applied in dyspeptic patients. Material and methods: We performed a double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Patients aged between 18-45 years old, attending the Centro de Salud Felipe II, Area 8, Madrid were enrolled, with a total sample of 86 subjects randomized in three groups. Pressure pain thresholds were measured on T4-T5-T6 spinous processes with a digital algometer, and health status was evaluated with the DRHS before and after the manipulative treatment protocol (dog technique in bilateral extension on T4-T5). Results: The manipulation applied on T5-T6 did not significantly modify the PPT registered on T4-T5T6 dorsal spinous processes (p > 0.05) when pre-post treatment measurements were compared, or when the study groups were compared. The manipulation applied on level T5-T6 modified the DRHS score (p < 0.05) when pre-post treatment measurements were compared, but this difference was not statistically significant when compared with the other groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Manipulation on level T5-T6 produced no significant modifications in either the DRHS score or the PPT in T4-T5-T6 spinous processes in intergroup comparisons. We therefore conclude that the dog technique in bilateral extension does not affect the values registered for these variables in dyspeptic patients.
