Resumen

Why to write and how to do it are two unavoidable questions today. The Uruguayan author Mario Levrero (1940–2004) has reverted to handwriting as a hermeneutical and aesthetic answer to that problem. With El discurso vacío (1996) and La novela luminosa (2005) Levrero has developed the draft into what I call an ‘avant-text’ – not an unconcluded text, but a new discourse pregnant with unlimited opportunities, a free graphic project. The main topic of his late works are the act of writing itself, operating under three categories: ‘open text’, ‘marginalia’, and ‘the real’ with its multiple temporalities
