Abstract

Social rejection, ignorance and social prejudices about people with severe mental disorders make their socio-labor integration very difficult and can lead to social exclusion processes that can lead in economic poverty and social isolation. These consequences are more related to social stigmatization and self-stigmatization processes than to those derived from the mental disorder itself. This study aims to analyze the perceptions that the population has about people with severe mental disorder and their contribution to these social stigmatization processes. The methodology used has been quantitative and non-experimental and, within this approach, a descriptive and causal analysis has been carried out through a survey study. The results show that the population surveyed presents stigmatizing attitudes towards people with severe mental disorder. With respect to the variables studied, a tendency to increase stigma can be observed as the age of the sample increases. On the other hand, there are significant differences in the stigma values obtained according to gender, with men being the ones who show a greater stigma towards this group than women.
