Abstract
Currently, sustainable development is not just a wish but a necessity. This typology of development and growth, transversal to all disciplines and fields related to management and territorial governance, is based on a strategic planning process. In fact, in ultraperipheral territories, as is the case of islands, this issue gains additional emphasis. Based on the exposed, the present study, through the literature review along with the analysis of an insular case study (the Azores Autonomous Region), aims to identify principles of strategic planning based on Rural Tourism. In this regard, the study allowed us to understand this issue deeply and also to define principles and guidelines that enable the involved actors to plan and manage a long-term sustainable development.
