Abstract

The aims of this investigation were to translate the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR; Paulhus, 1998), to validate its structure of two correlated factors (self-deception and impression management), to calculate the internal consistency and to describe the distributions of the total score and its factors, to observe sex differences and to estimate its relationship to the scale of Self-Statements during Public Speaking (SSPS; Hofmann & DiBartolo, 2000). It was used a probability sample stratified by sexes (312 men and 312 women). When the BIDR was simplified to the 10 positivelykeyed self-deception items and the 10 positively-keyed impression management items, its internal consistency, fit to the data and detection capacity of the bias sought in its aspects of simulation and self-criticism deficit were optimized. The distribution of the positively-keyed items was negatively skew, and that of the negatively-keyed items was normal. The BIDR shared almost a fifth of variance with the SSPS, especially its factor of 10 positively-keyed self-deception items. It is suggested its use and study in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries.
